‘Calaveritas’ in our English classrooms
In their English class, the secondary school students celebrated Día de Muertos by creating their own ‘calaveritas literarias’. These compositions, full of humuor and creativity, not only included clever texts, but also demonstrated a complex process of organising rhyme and rhythm. Additionally, they reflected the Mexican traditions of honouring the deceased.
The students were inspired by our traditions to write about family members, friends, teachers, and iconic symbols of this festivity, such as ‘papel picado’ and offerings, successfully blending culture with English learning.
These types of projects are highly important as they allow students to take ownership of the work, personalise it and make it truly theirs. Additionally, they greatly enjoyed creating these unique and fun texts making the experience both meaningful and enjoyable.

En la clase de inglés, los estudiantes de secundaria celebraron el Día de Muertos creando sus propias calaveritas literarias. Estas composiciones, llenas de humor y creatividad, no sólo incluyeron textos ingeniosos, sino que también demostraron un complejo proceso de organización con rimas y ritmo. Además, reflejaron las tradiciones mexicanas de honrar a los difuntos.
Los alumnos se inspiraron en nuestras costumbres para escribir sobre familiares, amigos, maestros, y símbolos icónicos de esta festividad, como el papel picado y las ofrendas, logrando así una exitosa combinación entre la cultura y el aprendizaje del inglés.
Este tipo de proyectos son de gran importancia ya que permiten a los y las alumnas apropiarse del trabajo, personalizándolo y haciéndolo verdaderamente suyo. Además, disfrutaron mucho al crear estas calaveritas literarias tan especiales y divertidas, lo que hizo de la experiencia algo significativo y ameno.
