Project: A recipe
As part of a recent project, some of our 1st grade secondary students worked in pairs to explore how to communicate ideas naturally in English. Each pair chose a recipe they found interesting and planned how to present it in a video format, thinking carefully about how to make their message clear, engaging, and easy to follow. Rather than focusing on simply giving instructions, students were encouraged to speak more freely and share the process in a way that felt authentic and communicative.
Throughout the project, they incorporated cooking verbs from a previous unit, using them in context as they described each stage of the recipe. This helped reinforce their understanding of the vocabulary while also allowing them to experiment with language in a more spontaneous way. In addition, students made decisions about how to organize their videos, how to divide roles, and how to capture their audience’s attention.
Overall, the activity promoted collaboration, creativity, and confidence, while giving students the opportunity to use English in a meaningful and practical context.

Como parte de un proyecto reciente, estudiantes de primer grado de secundaria trabajaron en parejas para explorar cómo comunicar ideas de forma natural en inglés. Cada pareja eligió una receta que les pareció interesante y planificó cómo presentarla en formato de video, pensando cuidadosamente en cómo hacer que su mensaje fuera claro, atractivo y fácil de seguir. En lugar de centrarse simplemente en dar instrucciones, se animó a las y los estudiantes a hablar con más libertad y compartir el proceso de una manera auténtica y comunicativa.
A lo largo del proyecto, incorporaron verbos de cocina de una unidad anterior, usándolos en contexto al describir cada paso de la receta. Esto ayudó a reforzar su comprensión del vocabulario y, al mismo tiempo, les permitió experimentar con el lenguaje de forma más espontánea. Además, tomaron decisiones sobre cómo organizar sus videos, cómo dividir los roles y cómo captar la atención de su audiencia.
En general, la actividad fomentó la colaboración, la creatividad y la confianza, a la vez que brindó a las y los estudiantes la oportunidad de usar el inglés en un contexto significativo y práctico.
