The Power of the Pen and the Potion: Exploring Literary Magic in Bachillerato

This year, our English classes and high school activities ventured into the dark and enchanting realms of witches and sorcerers, centering our celebration on the profound relationship between literature and lore. Far from a simple costume day, this theme allowed our students to analyze how the supernatural has been used throughout literary history to challenge social norms, explore human ambition, and mirror societal fears. By examining these magical archetypes, students discovered that words themselves are the ultimate form of sorcery: capable of creating entirely new worlds or altering reality.

The academic journey began with a literary dive into classic and contemporary texts, tracing the evolution of magic from Edgar Allan Poe’s weird uncle in The Tell-Tale Heart to the mob tradition of Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery and modern fantasy. Inspired by these readings, the students became authors of their own learning by bringing the stories to life and recreating their most iconic scenes. Thus, the classrooms were decorated with their own artistic creations, ranging from detailed drawings to handmade figurines.

To bring this enchanting celebration to life, our school community gathered for a spectacular costume exchange that bridged our oldest and youngest learners. The kindergarten students visited the high school, creating a delightful showcase where they could proudly display their own costumes while marveling at the creative designs of the older students. The festivities kicked off with the little ones leading the parade, bringing an energy of pure wonder to the halls. Our teachers followed closely behind, adding to the festive atmosphere, before the high school students finally closed the parade by marching in their own imaginative attire, proving that the magic of imagination is something shared by all ages.
