HOW TO BE BRITISH
Last year I had the opportunity of accompanying the group of students of Colegio Madrid who went to Bath, England, to study English during the summer. It was not only a very interesting experience because of the coexistence with the kids, the wonderful places we visited, and everything we shared with students and teachers from other nationalities; it was unforgettable because I demonstrated to myself that to communicate successfully in another place it is not only necessary to know the language but also the culture.
Even though the majority of students and I had the necessary level to communicate in English, most of the misunderstandings and surprises we lived there were due to the cultural differences.
If it is true that to get to know well a culture is mandatory to be in it for a while, I also think that it is essential to teach the language from its culture. This idea was the one that motivated me to make the bulletin board of this month about some typical characteristics of the British culture: politeness, sense of humour, the tea tradition, among others.
It is undoubtable that English is a very old and beautiful language. However, its culture may amaze anybody!
CÓMO SER UN INGLÉS
El año pasado tuve la oportunidad de acompañar al grupo de alumnos del Colegio Madrid que se fue a Bath, Inglaterra, para estudiar inglés durante el verano. No sólo fue una experiencia muy interesante por la convivencia con los chicos, los maravillosos lugares que conocimos y todo lo que compartimos con estudiantes y maestros de otras nacionalidades, sino me resultó inolvidable porque comprobé que para comunicarse exitosamente en otro lugar no basta con saber su lengua: es necesario conocer su cultura.
A pesar de que la mayoría de los alumnos y yo teníamos un nivel de inglés suficiente para comunicarnos con los demás, casi todos los malentendidos o las sorpresas que vivimos allá se debieron a las diferencias culturales.
Si bien es cierto que para conocer una cultura a fondo es necesario estar dentro de ella durante un tiempo, también considero que es importante enseñar la lengua desde su cultura. Esta idea fue la que me motivó para poner el periódico mural de este mes sobre algunas características típicas de la cultura inglesa: la cortesía, el sentido del humor, la tradición del té, entre otras.
No cabe duda que el inglés es una lengua muy hermosa y antigua. No obstante, ¡su cultura puede maravillar a cualquiera!
