Representando a México en la Masterclass Internacional en Terapia de Partículas
El pasado 14 de marzo del 2024 tuve la oportunidad de asistir al Instituto de Ciencias Nucleares en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) para tomar la Masterclass Internacional en Terapia con partículas. Una vez que encontramos nuestros asientos, las siguientes 10 horas del día estuvieron llenas de conocimiento y aprendizaje.
Como alumna, fue muy interesante comprender cómo funcionan éste tipo de terapias para tratar distintas patologías que afectan un sector amplio de la sociedad. Los cuatro ponentes abordaron el tema desde múltiples puntos de vista, entre ellos el Físico, el Biológico e incluso el punto de vista de una Física Médica. Nos mostraron el marco teórico, así como las ventajas y desventajas de aplicar estas terapias en pacientes. Tratar un mismo problema desde la perspectiva de las distintas disciplinas, nos ayudó a comprender mejor el tema. Incluso nos permitió que, más adelante, pudiéramos diseñar nuestras propias terapias evaluando distintos casos, que era el ejercicio principal de la Masterclass. Tener el privilegio de poder manejar un software capaz de simular este tipo de terapias fue una experiencia muy gratificante y que todos disfrutamos.
Con ayuda de los asesores, armamos una presentación en la que expusimos el caso que preparamos durante la videollamada que se llevó a cabo el día 15 de marzo, con la finalidad de plantear los resultados que cada institución obtuvo. Tuve el honor de poder exponer nuestros resultados como representante de la UNAM y del país. Al ser una Masterclass internacional con la presencia de universidades de todo el mundo, nuestros resultados tuvieron que ser presentados en inglés. Dejando de lado la oportunidad que recibí para poder practicar mi manejo del lenguaje, fue muy enriquecedora la interacción con las demás instituciones, que mostró la diversidad de resultados y procedimientos que se posibilitaron dadas las instrucciones que recibimos. Me sentí muy afortunada de poder relacionarme con jóvenes de todo el mundo con los mismos intereses que yo, y con el conocimiento adquirido, saber apreciar el trabajo de cada uno de ellos. Agradezco profundamente a mi profesora Sara Lissette Gómez y a todos los involucrados por habernos brindado esta oportunidad única y por permitirnos explorar distintas ramas del mundo científico.

Last March 14, 2024, I had the opportunity to visit the Nuclear Science Institute at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) to take part in the International Masterclass in Particle Therapy. Once we had found our seats, the next 10 hours of the day were full of knowledge and learning.
As a student, it was deeply interesting to understand how these therapies work to apply them to different pathologies that affect a wide range of our society. The four speakers tackled the topic from multiple points of view, amongst them the Physics point of view, the Biological point of view, and even the point of view of a Medical Physicist. We were shown the theoretical framework, including the advantages and disadvantages of applying these therapies to patients. To tackle the same problem from different disciplines, helped us to get a better understanding of the topic. It even allowed us to design our own treatment, evaluating different cases, which was the main exercise of the Masterclass. Having the privilege of being able to manipulate software capable of simulating these therapies was a gratifying experience that every single one of us enjoyed.
With the help of the tutors, we prepared a presentation in which we exposed our case of choice which we would display during the video conference that took place on March 15, with the purpose of comparing the different results each institution worked with. I had the honor to expose our results representing the UNAM and the country in said video conference. By being an International Masterclass with the participation of universities from all over the world, our work had to be presented in English. Leaving aside the opportunity I received to practice my use of the language, the interaction with the different institutions, which showed the variety of results and procedures that were possible due to the same instructions, was a truly enriching experience. I felt profoundly fortunate to be able to relate with young people all over the world with the same passions as me, and with the acquired knowledge, appreciating the work of each one of them. I would like to thank my teacher Sara Lissette Gómez and everyone involved for bringing these opportunities to us and fomenting us to explore different branches of science.
