Learning to describe creatures collaboratively

In 3^rd grade, as one of the projects done during the English class, some animals and their characteristics were discussed, and the children were free to name some of the ones they already knew. We talked about some mythological creatures, and, at the end, some animals were chosen randomly and some of their specific features were mixed with the intention of inventing a creature.

The students wrote short sentences using simple and familiar vocabulary and with their participation and collaboration, a whole text was produced. It was written on the whiteboard and any mistakes that might exist were named, with the intention that the students could identify and correct them. At the end, they copied the description, and they illustrated the creature that had emerged.

In addition to being an entertaining and creative activity, our students were able to use English in a contextualised and meaningful way.

En 3^er año, como uno de los proyectos realizados durante la clase de inglés, se habló de algunos animales y sus características y las y los niños pudieron nombrar algunos de los animales que ya conocían. Hablamos de algunas criaturas mitológicas y, al final, se eligieron algunos animales al azar y se mezclaron algunas de sus características específicas con la intención de inventar una criatura.

Las y los alumnos escribieron oraciones sencillas haciendo uso de vocabulario que les resultaba familiar, y con su participación y colaboración, se produjo un texto completo. Se escribió en el pizarrón y se mencionaron algunos errores para que ellas y ellos pudieran identificarlos y corregirlos. Finalmente, las y los niños copiaron la descripción e ilustraron la criatura que había surgido.

Además de haber sido una actividad entretenida y creativa, nuestras y nuestros alumnos pudieron utilizar el inglés de forma contextualizada y significativa.
