Field trip project: exploration mission to Mars
The fact that the Mars rover Perseverance landed successfully last February was an event of great significance that was approached in this trimester’s project. It was widely accepted by students. Although the fact that they all had some prior knowledge, the project was conceived to facilitate their deeper understanding of the matter in three different domains: scientific, critical thought, and creativity.
The project started with a short explanation of what rovers are as well as the aim of this particular mission to Mars. Afterwards, they watched a video about the Perseverance’s landing as preparation for their main task which was to design and build their own Mars rover. For the next step, they watched a short documentary about the preparation needed to become an astronaut, their jobs, and their everyday life. Then they consolidated their knowledge through a questionnaire. Finally, they downloaded the official NASA app to take selfies using as background real pictures from the NASA archive.
We believe that sensitizing and guiding our students on matters as relevant as this one is essential for their instruction. All the materials and resources used were carefully selected to guarantee a meaningful experience for the students, as well as adapted according to their English level. As teachers, this experience also represented learning and exploration of new areas, and it was truly gratifying to see the benefits of this field trip in terms of participation, creativity, and engagement on the part of the students. We will definitely continue working with topics of current interest for future projects.

Proyecto de práctica de campo: misión de exploración a Marte
Para el proyecto de este trimestre, decidimos retomar un suceso coyunturalmente relevante como lo fue la llegada del vehículo de exploración espacial Perseverance a Marte, el pasado mes de febrero. El proyecto tuvo gran aceptación por parte del alumnado. Ellos contaban con conocimientos previos sobre el tema y nuestra intención era que exploraran más a fondo el fenómeno en tres niveles diferentes: científico, crítico y creativo.
El proyecto comprendió una breve explicación de lo que son los vehículos de exploración espacial, así como el objetivo de esta misión a Marte. Posteriormente, vieron un video sobre el amartizaje como preparación para el diseño y elaboración de su propia nave de exploración espacial. A continuación, vieron un breve documental sobre la preparación, el trabajo de investigación y el día a día de los astronautas. Reafirmaron conocimientos a través de un cuestionario y finalmente, como actividad de cierre, descargaron una aplicación oficial de la NASA que les permitió tomarse un autorretrato con un fondo tomado del archivo de fotografías reales de la NASA.
Creemos que sensibilizar y orientar a nuestros estudiantes en temas tan relevantes como éste, es fundamental para su formación. Todos los materiales y recursos utilizados fueron cuidadosamente seleccionados para garantizar una experiencia significativa para los alumnos, así como adaptados de acuerdo al nivel de inglés que cursan. Como docentes, esta experiencia también representó aprendizaje y exploración de áreas nuevas, y fue realmente gratificante ver los beneficios de esta práctica de campo en términos de participación, creatividad y compromiso por parte de nuestros estudiantes. Definitivamente seguiremos trabajando con temas de interés actual para futuros proyectos.
