Project: The Universe

In 3^rd grade we worked on a project called ‘What do astronauts do in space?’.

We started with a listening activity that the kids really liked, as they imagined what the astronauts looked like dressed without their suits. They were surprised that Sally was an astronaut, the fact that everything flies in space and that they washed themselves with a fresh towel instead of taking a bath. We checked what we were doing at home that was similar or different to what the astronauts were doing. We reviewed the hours and it was very enriching work.

The book project, though, went from being an interview to something more creative and playful for the children, creating their own universe. Every day, before Friday, they asked me if we were going to do the project, they brought so much material they could have set up a stationery shop!

They were given a black sheet of paper and they freely created their universe. Some put a lot of stars, others planets and astronauts flying between them, the sun was given feathers like rays. Time went by very quickly working on this activity which turned out to be very inspiring.

En 3º año trabajamos en un proyecto llamado ‘¿Qué hacen los astronautas en el espacio?’.

Empezamos con una actividad auditiva que les gustó mucho a las y los niños, pues se imaginaban cómo se veían vestidos los astronautas sin sus trajes. Les llamó la atención que Sally fuera astronauta, el hecho de que todo vuela en el espacio y que se lavaran con una toalla fresca en lugar de bañarse.  Checamos qué hacíamos en nuestra casa de manera similar o diferente a lo que hacían los astronautas. Repasamos la hora y fue un trabajo muy enriquecedor.

Aunque el proyecto era del libro, pasó de ser una entrevista a algo más creativo y lúdico para los niños, crear su propio universo. Todos los días, antes del viernes, me preguntaban si ya íbamos a hacer el proyecto. ¡Trajeron tanto material, que podrían haber establecido una papelería!

Se les entregó una hoja negra y fueron creando libremente su universo. Unos ponían muchas estrellas, otros planetas y astronautas volando entre los mismos, al sol le pusieron plumas como rayos. Se fue muy rápido el tiempo trabajando en esta actividad que resultó ser muy inspiradora.
